Active Allyship: Supporting LGBTQ+ Students

Abstract

This session focuses on education around people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other Gender and Sexual Minority (LGBTQ+) and the issues they may face in various settings including higher education. Strategies for being an effective resource and ally to these students, common issues around allyship in classroom settings, and concrete actions for being an ally will also be discussed. No prior knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues are necessary for meaningful participation in this workshop. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify basic LGBTQ+ terminology, 2. Articulate current issues in LGBTQ+ communities, 3. Independently seek ways to be engaged in active and effective allyship
