Abstract

Sustainable communities are important for our nation because they promote energy conservation, as well as a reusable and recyclable lifestyle for future generations to prosper. With a proper assessment a town could have Sustainable development as the result of community coalition, inspiring ideas to rejuvenate outdated physical and societal structures for inhabitants. The goal of our SUSTAINABILITY MINOR CAPSTONE PROJECT was to build a framework using various attributes to measure sustainability in Plymouth. The different attributes included in the framework are food, water, energy, green infrastructure, transportation, waste and recycling. We incorporated the six community capitals (Natural, Physical, Economic, Human, Social, and Cultural) of sustainability into our framework to represent the overall structure of a sustainable community. The gradient scale we used rated the least sustainable attributes as zero and the most sustainable as ten. In the future this framework can be applied in other rural towns to measure the sustainability of their community, in hopes that they will improve upon their weaknesses and obtain pride in their achievements.
