Abstract

Bystander intervention training is a type of sexual assault prevention program increasingly being used on college campuses. Most prevention programs target potential survivors or perpetrators, but people tend not to self-identify as being in either of these categories. This and the need for an individual trainer makes these programs inefficient and potentially ineffective. Bystander intervention training gives students the knowledge and confidence to be able to interrupt situations where sexual assault may occur. Research has found good effects of bystander intervention training for college students. The current study sought to determine whether viewing TakeCARE, a bystander training video, would increase participants’ bystander behaviors and efficacy. In a previous study, this video was individually administered to participants. The current study showed the video to whole classes at once to increase ecological validity, as group administration is more feasible. In a randomized control trial, first year students were shown either the TakeCARE video or a study skills video. Participants were given a bystander efficacy scale and bystander behavior scale before viewing the video, immediately after, and two months later. Preliminary results will be presented.
