Abstract

Asquam Lake, which is now known as Squam Lake, saw in the late 19 century a popularity for its pristine water, picturesque islands, and majestic mountain views. This idyllic location was just far enough from the large cities of the South to be perceived as having intangible qualities promoting health and serenity for the body and the soul. It is perhaps for its location and outdoor life qualities that Squam Lake was chosen by many for their educational experimentation in organized summer camps. Through a careful review of historical literature, interviews, and onsite visits, student-researchers were able to uncover the fascinating history of the first organized summer camps in the USA. From 1886, with the foundation of Chocorua Camp to 1960, Squam Lake has played a pivotal role in the innovation and implementation of common summer camp practices and philosophy. The findings from this research indicates that the initial motivating factors of the creation of organized summer camp was not for recreational purposes but for educational purposes. In other words, Squam Lake can be considered the birthplace of Outdoor Education in America.
