Abstract

There are many gaps in the research concerning how well non-profits are adequately serving the specific needs and problems of women of color. I examined the literature that currently exists discussing various issues in the United States that disproportionately affect women of color. Among the issues that I am including in the scope of my research are the following: mass incarceration, poverty, and violence. I also explored existing research pertaining to empowerment processes to understand how non-profit organizations can and should be treating women of color. My research project will focus solely on New Hampshire non-profit organizations that address mass incarceration, poverty, and/or violence. To understand the extent in which these organizations are serving women of color, I will be surveying, as well as interviewing, employees that manage these non-profit organizations. From the data I collect, I will then determine how New Hampshire non-profit organizations can better serve women of color.
