Extraction and Purification of Myoglobin From Bovine Muscle Cells

Abstract

Myoglobin is an essential protein found in muscle cells that has a high affinity for oxygen. When the cells lack oxygen due to harsh conditions, such as anaerobic exercise, myoglobin releases it's bound oxygen to the muscle cells. Myoglobin is a well researched protein that can be found in high abundance within muscle cells. In this experiment, myoglobin will be extracted and purified from bovine muscle cells. Once purified, the myoglobin protein will be analyzed through liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine the amount of protein found within the bovine cells. This experiment will solidify techniques common in protein extraction and purification, as well as expand on protein analysis techniques.
